Summary

New York Times-bestselling author Goldy Moldavsky delivers a deliciously twisty YA thriller that's Scream meets Karen McManus about a mysterious club with an obsession for horror。

When it comes to horror movies, the rules are clear:

x Avoid abandoned buildings, warehouses, and cabins at all times。
x Stay together: don’t split up, not even just to “check something out。”
x If there’s a murderer on the loose, do not make out with anyone。

If only surviving in real life were this easy。。。

New girl Rachel Chavez turns to horror movies for comfort, preferring stabby serial killers and homicidal dolls to the bored rich kids of Manhattan Prep。。。and to certain memories she’d preferred to keep buried。

Then Rachel is recruited by the Mary Shelley Club, a mysterious society of students who orchestrate Fear Tests, elaborate pranks inspired by urban legends and movie tropes。 At first, Rachel embraces the power that comes with reckless pranking。 But as the Fear Tests escalate, the competition turns deadly, and it’s clear Rachel is playing a game she can’t afford to lose。

I thought this book was good。 I was able to figure out the twists along the way, but I think it is a great read for a young adult。 I appreciate the mentions of old horror movies and ones from my childhood/teen years。 The author does a great job writing about the forming years of high school and what is important to young people at that age, acceptance and belonging。 There was that "I Know What You Did Last Summer" vibe intertwining throughout the book。 I liked how it ended on a cliff hanger, wit I thought this book was good。 I was able to figure out the twists along the way, but I think it is a great read for a young adult。 I appreciate the mentions of old horror movies and ones from my childhood/teen years。 The author does a great job writing about the forming years of high school and what is important to young people at that age, acceptance and belonging。 There was that "I Know What You Did Last Summer" vibe intertwining throughout the book。 I liked how it ended on a cliff hanger, with the "Final Girl" looking over her shoulder! 3。5 stars。 I loved the concept of this one and the development of the plot。 I totally saw the final twist a mile away, but I enjoyed the story nonetheless。 The writing is a bit lackluster at times, but I would check out more from this author in the future。 This is a great book for spooky season。 And if you love horror movie references, this is the book for you!

This book has some fun twists that kept me on my toes!

The end of the book was completely unexpected, wow! This mixture of incomprehension and interest that grows with each chapter。 Wah

The plot was original & good… until the end。 There was so much build up for what felt like an underwhelming and far-fetched ending。 However, I loved Rachel & Saundra along with all the horror movie references!

This is no Scream。 The idea for a great teen thriller with a mysterious killer on the loose with many horror tropes sounds exciting, but the execution is lacking。 In the end, I was bored, and the finale just dragged and dragged and then landed with a thud of an underwhelming ending。

I really liked this book。 It kept it fun and interesting to the readers and it would bring in pivotal information from the beginning and dive deeper into the further you read。

This honestly was not what I was expecting at all, but it was still interesting either way。 I read this in one day and just really couldn’t put it down, but I also felt like there could have maybe more depth to the main character and even the plot。

This is an incredibly entertaining story, with a fun mystery inside。 However, it lacks the atmosphere I was expecting。 I wanted to be completely immersed in this world, a world promising Horror movie vibes, but instead leans into the cheesy aspect of the horror genre。 (The stereotypical tropes we roll our eyes at, yet accept as being okay in that setting)。 Some elements had potential to be frightening, but Moldavsky backed off just shy of reaching it。 Take this from someone that spooks at shadow This is an incredibly entertaining story, with a fun mystery inside。 However, it lacks the atmosphere I was expecting。 I wanted to be completely immersed in this world, a world promising Horror movie vibes, but instead leans into the cheesy aspect of the horror genre。 (The stereotypical tropes we roll our eyes at, yet accept as being okay in that setting)。 Some elements had potential to be frightening, but Moldavsky backed off just shy of reaching it。 Take this from someone that spooks at shadows, I wanted more scary elements (haha!)。 That being said, I really did enjoy this book。Each character is morally gray, which I applaud as it begs us to question what we’d do if we were in their place。 I’m not sure if this was intentional, but I do love the discourse of what causes people to join certain groups, and what people are willing to do to remain there。 Also, what happens when you’re stuck in a cult-like setting without a way of escape without exposing secrets。 Is it selfish to remain? 🤔 To conclude, I love the ominous ending and hope this book remains a stand-alone! Let’s just leave it on that note, please 🙌🏻 。。。more

2022 Spooktober read #02 “If you want this to be over, just make sure she screams。” You guys, listen, this was a whole ass BOP。 Crazy fun, slightly predictable but still oh so satisfying twist, great concept and awesome execution。 I truly, truly believe this is a criminally underrated book that deserves more recognition。 If you're a horror movies fan, there's no way this won't be a blast。 If you love Scream , then some bits will get you screaming in excitement (no pun intended)。Speaking 2022 Spooktober read #02 “If you want this to be over, just make sure she screams。” You guys, listen, this was a whole ass BOP。 Crazy fun, slightly predictable but still oh so satisfying twist, great concept and awesome execution。 I truly, truly believe this is a criminally underrated book that deserves more recognition。 If you're a horror movies fan, there's no way this won't be a blast。 If you love Scream , then some bits will get you screaming in excitement (no pun intended)。Speaking of the characters, Shauna is a girlboss and I will defend her forever。 Lux is in her Alison DiLaurentis era but she has ultimate girlboss potential。 Our main character, Rachel, is a bit bleh but I actually appreciate it in this book, as she plays the part of the typical final girl so well。 The other people in the Mary Shelley Club I won't speak of since even the reveal of their names is possibly a spoiler, but I did enjoy all of them both separately and as a group。Am I on my way now to read all of Goldy Moldavsky books? Yes, yes, I am。 。。。more

If I were to give this one a rating it would probably be 3, but this book wasn't really written for me, so I'm not actually going to rate it。 If you like horror films, this book is for you。 I enjoyed parts of it, but the horror movie tropes got to be a but much for me personally as horror movies are most definitely not my thing no matter what kind。 I feel like I also don't want to believe that people would really do some of these things to each other just for kicks。 Great characters and premise。 If I were to give this one a rating it would probably be 3, but this book wasn't really written for me, so I'm not actually going to rate it。 If you like horror films, this book is for you。 I enjoyed parts of it, but the horror movie tropes got to be a but much for me personally as horror movies are most definitely not my thing no matter what kind。 I feel like I also don't want to believe that people would really do some of these things to each other just for kicks。 Great characters and premise。 Perfect for horror fans! 。。。more

I’ve been meaning to read this one since last October。 Oops。 I think I’m also one of the last of my friends to read this so there’s that too, haha。 I’m glad to have read it now。 This made another great spooky read for me with its gorey-ness。 It starts off with getting to know a group of teens。 Slowly you start to realize that there are nothing normal about these said teens and that’s where things start to get interesting! I liked main character and it was so easy to root for her。 Other characters were okay but not that special。 This was really atmospheric read and I really loved that。 I also loved how there were crafted different horror scenarios。 I would have loved to have more thrilling moments because atmosphere was perfect but there weren't that many scary scenes。This had a nice solid plot and good amount of action。 With less contemporary genre represented this would have been even more intriguing。 I liked main character and it was so easy to root for her。 Other characters were okay but not that special。 This was really atmospheric read and I really loved that。 I also loved how there were crafted different horror scenarios。 I would have loved to have more thrilling moments because atmosphere was perfect but there weren't that many scary scenes。This had a nice solid plot and good amount of action。 With less contemporary genre represented this would have been even more intriguing。 。。。more

⭐️⭐️✨I feel like everything I have to say about this book is rather negative: I didn’t like the writing style or the audiobook narration; some of the characters were pretty annoying; and, given the genre and the premise, I was expecting it to be more exciting or thrilling, but it left me cold。 On top of that, did I miss something or did the author just never address why (view spoiler)[Matthew chose Rachel for his fear test (hide spoiler)]? I had high hopes for this book, partly because of all the 5 star reviews, but also because I love horror。 I understand this is a YA novel。。。 but seriously? The plot was unique (which says a lot considering I read a lot of horror/crime based books), but the execution was weak。

Gotta give this 4。5🌟。I was surprised how into this YA thriller I got! From start to finish I was hooked!

The Mary Shelley Club was SO GOOD。 So many of my friends raved about it, now I’m just bummed it took me so long to get it。 This book is almost 500 pages and I still read it in only 2 days。 I couldn’t put it down! I loved all the references to my favorite horror movies, like Scream, Ready or Not, and obviously Frankenstein。 This book gave off such creepy vibes, and I read it in the middle of the woods at night。 😂 Perfect setting to read this book。 Anyway, it kind of ends off a bit open ended, so The Mary Shelley Club was SO GOOD。 So many of my friends raved about it, now I’m just bummed it took me so long to get it。 This book is almost 500 pages and I still read it in only 2 days。 I couldn’t put it down! It’s going to live rent free in my head forever。 Highly recommended for fans of horror。 。。。more

I never read a book that felt like a horror movie before and this one was it。 Loved every second of it。Rachel drove me crazy since she started at the new school。 The way she was cringy to a group of students that she never ever talked to before just because they seem mysterious and liked pranks got me so annoyed with her。 Girl。 Calm down。 Seeming a bit desperate there。I actually read a spoiler about the ending so I knew something was coming but I honestly couldn't see it。 I was blinded。 Shocked。 I never read a book that felt like a horror movie before and this one was it。 Loved every second of it。Rachel drove me crazy since she started at the new school。 The way she was cringy to a group of students that she never ever talked to before just because they seem mysterious and liked pranks got me so annoyed with her。 Girl。 Calm down。 Seeming a bit desperate there。I actually read a spoiler about the ending so I knew something was coming but I honestly couldn't see it。 I was blinded。 Shocked。 Hurt。The pranks they did seem a bit extreme and very harmful as you will see when someone always gets hurt in the progress by a hooded figure。 Honestly if you get joy in these pranks and how they make the other person look, you need help。 I get that they are bullies but damn。 But anyways like I said, this novel is like a movie so the ending is left open for interpretation。4 Stars。 。。。more

THE BOOK WAS EPIC, but I bet you are wondering why only 4 stars than??? Well, at first this book was really boring since it was a really slow process in my opinion on getting to the plot twists and stuff。 BUT twists that could blow you away, showed up in the end and turned this book around from a 2 star rating to a 4 star。 Honestly, it left me craving for more in the end and I wish it would explain what happens to the main character in the end instead of a cliff hanger… If a part 2 came around t THE BOOK WAS EPIC, but I bet you are wondering why only 4 stars than???
